Eye Health Q & A

What conditions put eye health at risk?

Your eyes are organs, and just like other organs in the body, they can suffer damage or disease. A variety of factors affect your eye health and your vision, but advancements in technology mean there’s a lot you can do to protect your eyes.

Some common causes of vision loss and blindness are due to the natural aging process. Age-related eye diseases include:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration

Sometimes, lifestyle habits can impact eye health. With the rise of smartphones and tablets, computer vision syndrome causes eye fatigue and can even lead to chronic dry eye, a bothersome condition that makes eyes red, itchy, and painful.

Diabetic retinopathy is another leading cause of eye damage and vision loss. An estimated 30 million Americans have diabetes, a metabolic condition that can cause nerve damage. Diabetic retinopathy is a common eye condition for people living with diabetes.

What tests evaluate eye health?

Today’s technology allows the team at Eyecare Professionals the ability to see inside your eye and identify any changes to your eye’s structure that could signal disease. Your doctor may recommend a variety of tests at your routine eye exam.

Visual field testing

The team uses visual field testing to check your peripheral vision, or how well you can see at the sides of your vision. Peripheral vision loss is one of the only early signs of glaucoma, and detecting vision loss early can help prevent the condition from getting worse.

Retinal imaging

Eyecare Professionals is proud to have a wide-angle retinal camera in the office to take 120-degree images of your retina. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is another advanced test to examine the retina layer by layer.

With both the wide-angle retinal camera and OCT, your doctor can see the health of your retina and evaluate your risk for conditions like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and more.

Macular pigment density testing

Macular pigment density testing is one of the best ways to check your eyes for macular degeneration. Eyecare Professionals’ macular density scanner provides a detailed look at your eye health from the front to the back.

How can I keep my eyes healthy?

It’s important to get regular comprehensive eye exams throughout your life. Many common eye diseases have few early warning signs but can lead to blindness if left untreated.

Eye exams that test your vision and your eye health help your doctor monitor changes and health conditions impacting eye health.

There are a number of lifestyle factors that influence your eye health and overall well-being. To keep your eyes healthy as you age, eat a nutritious diet rich in dark, leafy greens and omega-3 fatty acids. Living an active lifestyle and avoiding tobacco are good for your eyes, too.

Your health is a top priority at Eyecare Professionals. For eye care beyond vision alone, make an appointment at one of the convenient North Dakota locations by phone or online today.
